This June won’t be boring: in addition to our own symposium in two weeks’ time on June 14 and 15, we also have some event tips on the program for this week. All in all, there are numerous opportunities this month to visit exciting projects and get to know current interim uses. And have we already mentioned our symposium?
Invitation to the symposium: Register now!
On Wednesday, June 14 and Thursday, June 15, 2023, we are organizing the symposium CIRCULAR POTENTIALS – Added value of vacancy activation in cooperation with the Vienna Business Agency.
Day 1 is aimed at invited experts from the fields of urban administration, the real estate industry, spatial companies, research and science. The keynote speeches by representatives of exciting projects from Bremen, Berlin, Riga, St. Gallen, Ebeltoft and Vienna are available online for everyone. The link will be available on our website on the day of the event. Day 2 is aimed at all interested parties with the motto ‘Opportunity spaces for Vienna – using vacant space creatively’.
There will be insightful keynote speeches, in-depth panel sessions and an excursion to current temporary use projects in Vienna together with the Creative Spaces Vienna team. An exciting panel discussion will take place on Thursday, June 15 at 7 p.m. in the WEST/alte WU ballroom on the topic of ‘Opportunity spaces for Vienna – using vacancies creatively’. This will be preceded by a lecture by Angelika Psenner (Professor of Urban Planning, TU Vienna) and a guided tour of the interim use project WEST.
- To take part in the excursion and the panel discussion, please register here. Attention: The excursion is almost fully booked.
- Here is the program overview with registration option for the public part.
- You can also find the Facebook eventhere.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank our cooperation partners from grätzlhotel x Urbanauts. Urbanauts transforms formerly vacant business premises into hotel rooms – and is already doing so in several neighborhoods in Vienna. We are delighted to be able to accommodate our guests for the symposium in the Grätzlhotels.

Discussion: Interim use – and then?
The Raumstation collective would like to initiate a discussion with the event series “Interim use – and then?”: The Althangrund is a utopia that has fallen out of time. At the same time, the area around the old WU has huge potential, as open spaces are also becoming scarcer in Vienna. Against the backdrop of the climate crisis, we need to radically rethink how we deal with existing buildings like these.
The first panel discussion and a game on June 1 will focus on the opportunities and limits of interim use. On the panel: Ula Schneider (SOHO in Ottakring/Kreative Räume Wien), Alisa Beck and Marie-Christin Rissinger (formerly mo.e) and interim users from Althangrund.
WHEN: Thursday, June 1, 2023, 19h
WHERE: Kulturzentrum Althangrund, Augasse 2-6, 1090

Never at Home x Photo Vienna: Invisible Obvious
On Friday, June 2, Never At Home and FOTO WIEN invite you to the vernissage #1 INVISIBLE OBVIOUS. This is about the artistic combination of socio-political themes between art and urbanity. Through this connection, Never at Home supports the visualization of vacancies in the city. With the photographic examination, this is once again brought into focus and the topic of “transparency in urban structures” is illuminated on several levels.
Never at Home is an initiative of young creatives that demonstrates and utilizes the potential of temporary use of real estate for artistic processes. Never at Home is currently using the former office and industrial building on Sachsenplatz in Vienna’s 20th district.
WHEN: Vernissage on Friday, June 2, 2023 17:00 to 22:00
WHERE: Never At Home / Sachsenplatz 4-6 / 1200 Vienna
The exhibited works can be visited during opening hours from June 3 to 11 Wed-Sun 3-6 pm.
Further information can be found at www.never-at-home.at.
Independent Space Index: The festival of project spaces in Vienna
This coming weekend, independent Viennese art spaces are jointly organizing an open day – throughout the city. The participating spaces will be open from 2pm to 6pm and will be showing current exhibitions that can be visited free of charge and without prior registration. Many of these spaces also host openings and other events in the evening. Definitely a recommendation for the weekend!
What is the Independent Space Index? The network of artist run, non-commercial and independent art spaces (also known as “off-spaces” or “alternative spaces”) was founded in Vienna in 2017. There are currently 83 spaces listed. The resulting public directory of spaces has become an important research tool for current artistic practice in Vienna.
WHEN: Friday, Saturday and Sunday, June 2-4 I 2 to 6 p.m.
WHERE: Project rooms/off-spaces throughout Vienna
Program and further information at 2023.independentspaceindex.at.
Gemma Zukunft: Interim use walk
Missed our excursion at the symposium? At the end of June, a guided walk through the 16th and 15th districts will once again offer the opportunity to get to know exciting Viennese temporary use projects on site and take a look behind the scenes. Local actors will report on their projects and their experiences during implementation and operation. Whether interested users, supporters, Grätzl residents, owners and managers or the curious – the walk is aimed at anyone interested in the topics of vacancy activation and temporary use.
Gemma Zukunft is the name of the program for walks on topics related to sustainable urban development in Vienna. From April to October, a wide variety of free walks and bike tours are offered throughout Vienna under this title. The walk on the topic of interim use will be led by Lena Rücker (Municipal Department 18 – Urban Planning and Urban Development).
When: Monday, 26.6.2023 I 15-17:30 h
Start: Ottakringer Straße 201 (on the street corner in front of the former “Boogie-Alm”), 1160 Vienna
All information and registration for the walk can be found here.
In the media: Radio Wien and wien.orf.at about vacancies
ORF wien heute asked us about the causes of vacancies in Vienna and possible solutions. A look at the current interim use of Never At Home on Sachsenplatz in the 20th district shows the potential that can unfold here. Recommended reading!
Review: Creative Spaces Vienna in the hauspost
Uli Fries and Katharina Egg from Kreative Räume Wien were able to give a little insight into our day-to-day work for the Wiener Wohnen magazine ‘hauspost’. The text was published in April.
