Description of the lecture series

Existing buildings and their transformation are increasingly becoming the focus of architecture and spatial planning. The activation and use of vacant space is an important building block for a vibrant urban culture, for an active community, for an innovative creative sector and, last but not least, for a more careful use of resources. However, in densifying cities in particular, this also leads to conflicts of use.

So what role can vacancy activation and interim use play in urban (culture)? What are the demands and needs for space? How can divergent demands on space be negotiated? And: How can spaces be activated and used at all? What planning instruments are available for this?

This lecture series aims to highlight the complexity and role of vacancy activation for interim use. In Austria, but also beyond. It is open to all interested parties.
